Weight Training to Offset Aging

After the age of 30, our bodies start to lose lean muscle mass at a rate of approximately one percent per year. The best way to offset this process is to do some form of resistance training, like lifting weights. All is not lost after 30 either, as numerous studies as well as millions of real-world examples prove that with proper training your fitness level can improve throughout your life. Think of weight training as your fountain of youth.

Valentine Meal!

Broiled Eye Round Steak & Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Recipe taken from Clean Eating Magazine
I came across this recipe and thought I would share it with everyone.  Looks like a great meal to serve your Valentine.
A three-ounce serving of eye round steak has only 138 calories, 1.2 grams of saturated fat and 3.5 grams of total fat – that’s almost 4 grams less fat than a T-bone. Along with zinc, vitamin B12 and iron, which aid in energy metabolism, beef is an excellent source of high-quality protein.
Serves: 4
Hands-on time: 10 minutes.
Total time: 20 minutes (plus overnight marinating)

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 3-oz eye round steaks
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Trim fat from steaks.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine vinegar, pepper, garlic, onion and salt, and mix well. Massage marinade into meat for 5 minutes before refrigerating it. Marinate meat in mixture overnight.
  3. After marinating, preheat broiler. Broil meat for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, turning once.
  4. Serve with Garlic Mashed Potatoes with a Twist, or another side of your choice.

ALTERNATIVE:

If you have an indoor grill, you can opt to use it instead of broiling the steaks. Simply preheat grill and cook meat for a total of 4 to 7 minutes, depending on desired level of doneness.

Enjoy,

Jeanne

Failure Is Not An Option!

Most of you know that I have been having major issues with my knee.  So much that walking without pain was something I thought I would never experience again.  I was giving up!  Something that is not in my nature to do.  With the right assistance and plenty of prayer, I am very happy to report that I was able to complete Turbo Fire 30 yesterday.  Now to many of you, this may seem like no big deal, but for me it was HUGE!!!  Don’t get me wrong, I was not able to jump like I would have wanted to, but I shut off those negative thoughts of “I can’t” and turned them into “ I CAN“!  I followed the modifications and proved to myself that low impact did not mean low energy!  I was soaked when I was finished, both from my perspiration and my tears of joy!

Stop the negative thoughts in their tracks.  If you tell yourself you can’t do something over and over, then chances are you won’t.  If you speak positively to yourself, then you can achieve anything you set out to do!

Donna Richardson asked this question the other day at the end of her Body Gospel workout:

What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?

So….. what would YOU do?  Think about it!

Blessings,

Jeanne

Tips on Getting More Fruit in Your Diet!

5 Tips for Getting More Whole Fruit in Your Diet

By Joe Wilkes

All right, so no processed sugar. High fructose corn syrup is definitely out of the question. And now science is finally proving that all those artificially sweetened sodas we’ve been quaffing so virtuously are just as bad for us as sugar is, and probably worse. What’s someone with a sweet tooth to do? The answer is the fruit, the whole fruit, and nothing but the fruit. While fruit juice contains some vitamins, you’re really missing out on the lion’s share of nutrients if you deprive yourself of the whole fruit.
The skin of the fruit contains most of the healthy carotenoids and flavonoids that have numerous benefits—including, studies are finding, providing some protection against cancer. The pulp of the fruit also contains flavonoids and vitamins that can be lost through the juicing process. And where fruit juice really falls short is in its fiber content. An apple contains around 4 grams of fiber. A glass of apple juice contains no fiber. Fiber helps your body digest and metabolize fruit’s naturally occurring sugar more slowly, which prevents your body from experiencing a “sugar spike”—the blood sugar elevation you get from drinking fruit juice. Plus we all know fiber is nature’s Roto-Rooter®, scrubbing your digestive system clean.

The argument for working a few servings of whole fruit into your diet each day is a strong one. After all, that old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” didn’t come out of thin air. When I was younger, I had a friend whose father was a doctor and she religiously ate an apple every day, including the core. Well, I thought that was a bit much, but I bet she was super-regular! A corollary to that old saying might be “An apple a day can make you pretty sick of apples after a couple of weeks.” As with incorporating most food into our diets, variety is the spice of life. Here are a few ideas for slipping more fruit into your day.

Cut it. A lot of times, a big bowl of fruit can be too daunting. You might not be hungry enough to eat a whole apple and you might opt for a smaller snack. Try slicing up a couple of apples and putting them in an airtight container or bag. By tossing them in lemon juice, you can prevent them from turning that unappetizing brown, at least for a day or so. Keep them in the fridge, or handy on your desk or in front of the TV, for a healthy snack. Any sort of combination of cut-up fruit is a great idea for a TV snack. Instead of absentmindedly eating a day’s worth of sodium and fat from the chip bag, you might eat your “apple a day” before you know it. Mix it. Tired of apples? Check out some of the more exotic fruits in your produce section or farmers’ market. Have you tried kiwis, pomegranates, mangosteens, or gooseberries? Also, get to know what the seasons bring to your neck of the woods. In California, we’re in the middle of Meyer lemon and blood orange season—delicious citrus varieties that aren’t as available or as good at other times of the year. And by mixing up the variety of fruits you eat, you’ll be getting a greater range of vitamins and antioxidants, thus maximizing your health benefits. Dip it. Especially for kids, a little fun time needs to accompany mealtime. But don’t fool yourself into thinking that those apple-and-caramel dipper packages are healthy snacks. I guess they’re better than pure caramel, but they’re still pretty much two steps back nutritionally from just eating healthy fruit. Instead, why not mix up some nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt with a little cinnamon? You’ll get the health benefits of yogurt. And cinnamon has been shown to have additional health benefits, like helping stabilize blood sugar. Dunking your fruit in a little unsweetened peanut butter makes for another great taste combo—the peanut butter gives the fruit some protein, and the fruit gives the peanut butter sweetness. Add it. Forget those cereals with the sugared raisins or other sweetened dried fruit. And I assure you that Cap’n Crunch® Crunch Berries® are not found anywhere in nature. There are a ton of hot and cold cereals that contain dried or artificial fruit, and while dried fruit has some nutritional value, it’s nothing—in nutrition or in flavor—compared to adding some berries or cut-up fresh fruit to your bowl of bran or oatmeal. Freeze it/can it.
While fresh fruit is often the most flavorful and nutritious option, procuring it can often be geographically or financially prohibitive. If getting fresh fruit is a hassle, consider buying fruit frozen or canned, or freezing or canning in-season fruit yourself. As with all prepared food, check the label to make sure that fruit isn’t merely a decorative addition to a can full of corn syrup. Fruit is best if packed in unsweetened natural fruit juice. (Pear juice is a common canning juice.) Bags of frozen berries are also great to have on hand to jazz up your morning smoothie or just to pop in your mouth on a hot summer day for a frosty snack.
Making “grapesicles” by throwing a bag of grapes in the fridge creates a great snack for kids and adults alike. And here’s another good tip: If you have some bananas that are turning brown, peel them and wrap them in foil and stick them in the freezer for later.

Struggles

"We've all been there"

Are you struggling with your workouts, diet, life in general?  We have all been there.  Some of us struggle on a daily basis.  I have learned that you don’t have to struggle alone.  There are people, good friends, that are there for you.  You just have to reach out!  I am a very independent person who thinks that I should be able to handle anything.  The truth is that you don’t (I) don’t have to put so much pressure on yourself,(myself).  Chances are that if you reach out, you will find out that others have one time or another felt some of the same things that you are feeling right now.  Take the time to take care of YOU!  REACH OUT!  Help is just around the corner.

NO MORE EXCUSES

What motivates you?  Or should I ask, what keeps you motivated?  For me, it is knowing that people depend and rely on me.  It always seems easier when you know that someone is counting on you.  Since becoming a Beachbody Coach, my issue of staying motivated is so much easier.  Giving up is no longer an option.  I am curious to know what sort of thing others do to keep themselves motivated.  Personally, when I am struggling with the idea of working out, I make myself do the workout for 10 minutes.  If after 10 minutes, I am still not feeling up to it, then I allow myself to stop.  I have to tell you all this has worked very well for me.  Usually after 10 minutes, I am fine.  I have to admit that I feel so much better when I am done, and I am usually so glad that I did not skip out on my workout.  Schedule your workout like you would any other important appointment.  You are investing in yourself and your health!  Do yourself a favor and do not talk yourself out of it.  YOU are worth it!

Magic Pill?

Since losing 25 lbs, I have been asked by so many people, “how did you do it?”  My response is hard work, consistency and BEACHBODY.  I have tried everything to lose weight.  You name it, I’ve done it.  Our fast paced society and our need for immediate gratification makes everyone wish there was this magic pill that would solve not only our weight issue but all of our problems.  The honest truth is there is no such thing.  It takes hard work, dedication, consistency, and sometimes just pure will.

Slim in 6 changed my life.  It was my “MAGIC PILL.”  I lost 18 lbs and 25 inches in 6 weeks.  If that is not quick results, then I don’t know what is.  I am not going to kid you.  It was hard!  Oh but the results and the way I feel was so worth it.  Thank you Beachbody and Rochelle my Coach for always being there when I needed you.  I too am paying it forward by being a Coach.  This has been one of the best things I could have ever done for ME!

PORTION CONTROL!

Completely off my usual tangent, but it is amazing to me how everything is now triple the size of old.  One thing that really helped me to shed 25 lbs was paying close attention to my portion sizes.  To think I used to eat whatever and not even look at the nutritional value in it.  No wonder I was having such an issue.  I am sure I am not alone in this.  If you are trying to lose weight, what and how much you put in mouth matters just as much as your exercise regimen!  I recommend buying measuring devices, but if you are on the run here are some helpful tips using your hands as a measuring device.

Palm = Proteins: Make protein portions the size of your palm. Protein is found in animal products, like fish, meats, and cottage cheese. Some veggie protein sources include legumes (beans, etc.), tofu, tempeh, and wheat glutens.

Thumb = Fats: Fats are important, but they’re also very dense, so match fat portions to the size of your thumb. Good fat sources are avocados, olive oil, nuts, and seeds.

Fist = Fruits, Grains, etc.: Your bread, fruit, cereal, rice, and grain portions should be about equal to the size of your closed fist. Remember that it’s always preferable to consume whole grains.

Hand = Veggies: Open your hand and spread your fingers as wide as you can. That’s a good vegetable portion. Raw vegetables are loaded with fiber and nutrients, and they contain very few calories.

PERSEVERANCE

Perseverance is defined as a steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.  I have decided that no matter what obstacle life throws me that I will come out just fine.  I am going to find out tomorrow whether or not I am going to need to have knee surgery again.  I say again because it has been two years since I had knee surgery for an injury that happened while running on a trail.  At first, I wanted to sit and feel sorry for myself.  I mean here I am having lost 25 lbs, feeling great, etc…  and then….   Well, you can fill in the blanks.  The bottom line is LIFE HAPPENS!  I have a customer who I immediately thought off.  I will not mention his name, because I have not received his permission to do so, but you know who you are.  This guy needed to have shoulder surgery.  He finished his rotation of INSANITY, then had shoulder surgery.  While recovering from his shoulder surgery, he suffered a detached retina.  Throughout all of this he has remained such an inspiration to me!  He could have just given up, BUT he didn’t.  He continued to choose to LIVE!  Thank you my FRIEND for being such an inspiration to me as I look toward, well… right now the unknown.  Knowing with all my heart, that no matter what I will PERSERVERE!

Self-Confidence

Raising children is well HARD! Especially when they are going through puberty and they have hormones driving them up and down a roller coaster. Thus I have been really thinking about the issue of self-confidence. Sure I think whether we are teens or adults, we all go through times when our self- confidence could be better. My obstacle right now is how do you teach someone self-confidence? I came upon this article and wanted to share. It really hit home. If this helps one person then it was well worth me posting.

When I was in my late teens a friend of mine, an elite athlete, gave me the most profound, yet simple advice that changed the way I would view myself forever. He told me:

“You yourself have to think you’re great because no one else is going to tell you, you are.”

Translation – It means that we alone are responsible for building self-confidence. We cannot depend on, or wait for anyone else’s approval. We must see ourselves as worthy and capable of achieving anything we choose to achieve.

Ultimately, how we see ourselves is more important than how anyone else sees us.

If we don’t work at loving and accepting ourselves, nothing anyone else thinks matters.

Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.”

Henry Ford

The moral I think is just that!  Loving and accepting the human being God made us to be and to be proud of that!
